Every week, someone new to The Guestbook asks the same question: "So wait, are you guys like an OTA?" The answer is no, and it's worth explaining why, because the distinction is the whole point. But the OTA isn't the one who envisioned the property, built it and invested in making it a great place to stay, the operator is!
The Guestbook was built to connect the guest directly to the operator. Our loyalty program lives on your booking engine, earns your guests cash back for booking directly with you, and strengthens the relationship with your guests. And our website is a bonus, an additional way you can be found. But we don't want to be the destination. We want the destination to win. We want you to win!
That distinction is becoming more urgent, not less. Airbnb crossed 50% of all vacation rental reservations in Q1 of this year, while direct bookings across the industry slipped to roughly 23%. This hits operators hard because direct bookings aren't just cheaper to acquire; they consistently run longer stays and longer booking windows than OTA-sourced bookings. Not capturing these often high-quality bookings directly is not just a loss for the operator but for the guest's wallet as well.
This is exactly why we're expanding The Guestbook with our Vacation Rental Collection. Vacation rental operators are living through a version of what hotels dealt with about a decade ago: rising distribution costs, shrinking guest data, and a limited share of the guest relationship. Hotels have spent years building muscle around loyalty, channel mix, and guest lifetime value (LTV) to fight that battle. That's institutional knowledge most VR operators haven't built yet, because until recently, they didn't have to.
We're not walking into the vacation rental space to become another marketplace competing for bookings. We're bringing 12+ years in hospitality: how to think about guest LTV, how to structure a loyalty program that actually drives repeat direct bookings, how to reduce reliance on any single channel, and applying it to an industry that's just now facing the same pressure hotels have navigated for years.
So when someone asks if we're an OTA, the honest answer is: we're the opposite, by design.
We don't win when you book through us. We win when your guest books through you, and keeps coming back.
