Comment: Hello Jan - Thankyou for that lovely message. I remember Fr McCaffery very well. I think the situation you described about so few receiving Communion at the 11.00am Mass was mainly due to the need in those days to fast from the previous midnight - so most communicants went to earlier Masses. It all changed after Vatican II though, some of it maybe not for the better? Are you in Toronto area?

Comment: So happy to have stumbled on your fabulous website. My family lived in Moss Bank and attended St Mary's from 1955 until 1962. My father converted to Catholicism at St Mary's with Fr Mc Caffery. We used to attend 11:00 Mass and no one received communion as it was "High Mass" Dad couldn't understand this and asked if we could receive. So every Sunday the 7 of us would line up and (unholy little girl that I was) just wanted to die of embarrassment Eventually others joined in and eased my pain!

Comment: Paul Finn - Thanks for your kind comments about our website. As for Catholic protests on issues of the day, I don’t suppose the parishioners of Birchley St Mary’s differ too much from those of most other Catholic Parishes. Yes, you could say Catholics in general seem to be ‘lukewarm’ about even the most important issues, but that’s the way we are isn’t it? Maybe we’ve had it too good for too long?

Comment: Valerie Kirkby - Thank you for reminding us of our orphanage. I don’t remember Fr Kelly, but I hope to add more details of past priests at St Mary’s soon so keep viewing our site.
