Comments: Searching for WINKs in Laxfield, I found your letters - a real piece of treasure! I started reading them and was hooked. I live near Laxfield and I know all the local places mentioned. I often drive past Yew Tree Farm. The Suffolk way of speaking comes through so clearly and it is fascinating to observe the way of life portrayed. I was surprised to note how far they travelled and interested to learn about goings on in places that I visit regularly.

Comments: Just thought you might like to know - re Letter 2 's postscript that a Blucher was a shoe having the tongue and vamp cut in one piece, and the quarters lapped over the vamp and laced together for closing.
My great-great-grandfather was George Garrould, a bootmaker from Halesworth.

Comments: Thank you for the Chandler family information, my great great grandmother wasDorothy Chandler who married William Owles at Wingfield. According to the census data she was born at Horham, but I don't see her name among the births for that village. Have you been to the actual parish records or are all your data taken from the Int. Genealog.Index? Best wishes

Comments: This is fascinating. I have just read one letter so far but will return to read more. I was looking up the Hartcup family as they originally owned the cottage I am buying in Bungay, Suffolk. It now feels as if I am stepping into the pages of a Jane Austen novel!

Comments: Thank you for producing such an excellent site. We are always looking for references to Garrould and in particular old Garrould trade publications and products. We have started work on the Garrould archive and will be publishing it at www.garrould.co.uk.

Comments: IT MAY INTEREST YOU TO KNOW THAT I WAS BORN AND LIVED UNTIL 1989 IN HARROWBY STREET, LONDON, AT THE END OF WHICH, ON THE CORNER WITH EDGWARE ROAD, STOOD GARROULDS DEPARTMENT STORE. MY GRANDMOTHER, WHO DIED IN 1969, WORKED THERE FOR A SHORT TIME AND I WELL REMEMBER FREQUENTING IT AS A CHILD - MOSTLY VISITING THE TOY DEPARTMENT! BY THAT TIME IT WAS NO LONGER EXCLUSIVELY A FIRM OF DRAPERS. GARROULDS WAS DEMOLISHED IN THE EARLY 60S AND A BLOCK OF LUXURY APARTMENTS NOW STANDS ON THE SITE.

Comments: Haven't got time to read the letters at this moment, but will return to do so. You are both very enterprising. I don't know where you find the time! (Must be because you are retired.)
