Comment: I joined the R.N as a Boy Seaman in May 1939 and was drafted to the Mashona in December, joining the ship on the Clyde. We sailed shortly after and went out into the Atlantic to meet the first Canadian troop convoy which we escorted into the Clyde. I was a member of Y gun crew and was at my action station on the day that we were attacked and sunk by enemy aircraft. Following 14 days survivors leave I was transferred to the Royal Canadian Navy and served until September 1960.
