Comment: During the Pearl Harbor attack, my paternal grandfather, on the cruiser Detroit, spotted what he thought was a blimp, hovering over the water. He asked, "What's that dirigible over there?" The guy next to him said, "That's no dirigible. That's the bottom of the Utah." Papa said his knees started shaking right then. Meanwhile, my maternal grandfather, a Utah survivor, was probably swimming for shore at that point. I feel so blessed today to still have both Papas. Thank all of you for our f

Comment: My family has no connection with the USS Utah, however, I grew up in a Navy family (father - 22yrs, 3 tours Vietnam, retired E7 Chief; mother - 26 yrs, civilian, Dept of Navy, Supply), and having lived in Utah for the last 14 yrs, am proud of what the USS Utah stood for. May we never forget....

Comment: My dad, Dewitt T. Buffkin, served as a shipfitter on the Utah in the mid-1920's. He was on the swim team and also boxed. His time aboard the Utah gave him much pride for the rest of his life. He was a crewmate of the bankrobber John Dillinger. Several years ago I was in touch with a crew member from Dec. 7, 1941 named Bob Graves. I'd like to hear from him again. I sent him a number of photographs from my dad's time on the Utah and I'd sure like to see them posted on this website.
