Comment: My grandfather, Otto Dirk (perhaps spelled "Doerk" at the time) served on the Utah during the Veracruz campaign. He was among other sailors who were armed and deployed to take the town. My grandfather had the rifle shot out of his hands by a sniper in a bell tower, then shot the sniper out of the tower after recovering his rifle. We still have his Veracruz campaign medal.

Comment: I was on Oahu for the 60th anniversary delivering a new weapon system to the Marines. My girlfriend and I walked across Ford Island from the USS Arizona to pay our respects to the men of the USS Utah. It was very well worth the walk. God Bless America and all who have and will serve her.

Comment: This website cleared up a 20 year old question for me. In 1986, my wife and I went to Hawaii for the first time and on a map of PH I saw "USS UTAH". I told my wife I had never heard of that battleship before. Then I had to explain how I knew it was a battleship. I am going to put up information in my office, so everyone, including my 7 year old grandson for school, we come in contact with has the opportunity to "hear" about the forgot battleship, the USS UTAH. Thank you for this website. Ern

Comment: Thank you for such a wonderful website and guest book. ;learned of my grandfather's service aboard the USS-Utah, recently. James Patrick Cunningham died on 1943.;was injured in a shipboard accident, but did live for several years in a small rural county of Virginia, Patrick County, and was paralysed for several years after this time in service. If anyone has any information, I would be most appreciative to have you share it.
Thanks. Teresa Cunningham Biggs

Comment: I had the opportunity to meet and speak with Master Chief Bill Hughes over the course of the Dec 7th, 2006, 65th Anniversary reunion. I was staying at the Hale Koa hotel in Honolulu, HI, and I spoke w/ him there. I am an active duty surface line officer. I have to say that men like Mr. Hughes continue to motivate those of us on active duty today. His grandson, Riley, reminded me of my own sons. Riley couldn't have been prouder, and neither could I. Thank you, Master Chief Hughes.

Comment: Well, it's been 65 years of loss for our family. I wish I could have known my grandfather. Thank you for this web site. It helps all of us know a lot more about what happened on that fateful Sunday morning. My children share it with their classmates at school each year so that hopefully a few in their generation will know and not forget the bravery of that time.

Comment: My cousin Marc just sent me the link to our uncle, David Crossett's photo only Gallery 3. My Grandmother was his oldest sister and Marc's mother was his baby sister. We both grew up with his loss leaving a painflul impact on our families. My Aunt raised a flag in his honor every Dec 7th. now, I do it for her. Few are left remembering him, we only know what we heard... your web site keeps him alive for more generations, thank you.
